Why a Contract Has Been The Best Investment in My Side Hustle

Can we talk about something? Grab your beverage of choice and get cozy!
A lot of businesses have launched during the pandemic. (Mine is one of them, even though it seems kind of weird to call my small side hustle a business, but technically, it is.) I have enjoyed seeing people come up with so many ideas about what to sell, how to get started with little to no money, and educate others on tips, tricks, services, and tools that are helpful to small business owners.
Since my business consists of digital products, I don’t have to worry about shipping or inventory costs. The bulk of what I spend is really for the programs and tools I use, and for the most part, I do look for things that are affordable (like the mic and tripod mentioned in this post).
There are times when it’s worth spending the money to invest in yourself and your business, and a contract is one of the items you shouldn’t cut corners on.
Many people don’t know this, but I briefly opened my online shop in March 2020 and closed it a month later. I put pressure on myself to get things up and running and so I added the very first version of #GetToKnowMe Instagram Stories to the shop. (It looked slightly different then than it does now and I shouldn’t have even changed the layout, but that’s a story for another day.)
No one bought it. No one even looked at it, and thankfully that was a blessing, because I didn’t have a Privacy Policy or a Website Terms of Use in place. Yikes. I still cringe when I think about it.
I started to think about opening the shop back up late last year and kept coming across pins on Pinterest about contract templates. The problem is that a lot of the contract templates I saw were geared to American entrepreneurs and freelancers and I wondered if I could find the same thing for Canadians like myself. I didn’t want to take the risk of putting together a Terms of Use or Privacy Policy from a free generator just in case it ended up causing more problems down the road.
I found Contracts Market on Instagram during a random scroll sesh (you know how it is) and kept my eye on the Website Terms of Use and Privacy Policy bundle (the most popular product!) until I bought it this March during a sale.
Contracts Market was created by Jaime Bell, a Canadian lawyer and entrepreneur, and consists of contract templates for Canadian freelancers and entrepreneurs in various industries like graphic design, podcasting, personal training, and more. (If you’re a Canadian freelancer or entrepreneur in need of a contract, feel free to purchase through my affiliate link* to get your brand new contract!)
The contracts are easy to use, customize, and follow along with, which is great for anyone with no experience in the legal field. (Like me.) I find that contracts and other legal documents can almost make your eyes glaze over at times and you find yourself reading the same thing over and over again just to try to gain some kind of understanding.
That’s not the case with the products from Contracts Market.
What I appreciated about the contract bundle I purchased was that everything was laid out in a way that I understood what each section meant and how it related to my business. There was not only a guide on how to use the templates, but also a checklist! I was worried that the process would be intimidating, but it was such a smooth and great experience. Keep in mind that this was my first time filling out a contract for my business ever, so that says a lot! Jaime and her team are available to answer any questions or concerns throughout any step of the process.
The Contracts Market birthday sale ends tomorrow, July 23, 2021, so there’s still time to get 20% off contracts and 30% off contract bundles!
Happy contract filling!
