#023 - Onboarding

Greetings, Earthlings!

I meant to get this blog post up by the end of January and that did not happen. Sorry to disappoint anyone who may or may not be actually viewing these posts.

This one came together fairly quickly and yes, the focus was on a Curls & Coils app. I mentioned on Instagram when I posted the final product that I would actually use an app like this in my everyday life.

I change my hair probably every one to two months or so depending on if I’m doing a long term protective style like crochet braids, Marley twists, or whether I’m just doing two strand twists all over my head without any extensions. It also depends on my schedule. I spent the majority of last year wearing faux locs and box braids for about 4-6 weeks per style, while incorporating some flat twists and buns in between.

However, when I’m getting the itch to change my hair, I don’t go to only one source. In fact, I search for hair inspiration on IG, Pinterest, natural hair blogs, and watch videos from more than a few natural hair YouTube vloggers. (My favourites include TastePINK, Ambrosia Malbrough, Jessica Pettway, and Mary K. Bella, fyi.) The onboarding idea for the Curls & Coils app came from me wishing that I was able to just use one tool to gather those product recommendations + information on my hair type, style inspiration, and of course, to connect with other people.

Shall we get started?

Curls & Coils Onboarding - FINAL

I added the shadows to provide some dimension to the screens and to avoid looking “flat”, as well as removing the iPhone X notch overlay. (It helps me remember exactly where the status bar, notch, etc., are when designing.)

Also, before I forget - the InVision prototype can be found here.

I wanted to do something different and use Figma, but I found that I really couldn’t dive in and learn on the fly. No. I had to scroll through help articles and honestly, I’ll revisit Figma at some point when I have a good chunk to time to absorb it all.
